Anger in Children: Causes, Effects and Coping Strategies Abstract This project discusses the causes, effects and coping strategies surrounding anger in children. Anger is a natural emotion but children often lack the social and verbal capacity to describe their emotions or to develop appropriate coping mechanisms. This project takes the form of a critical literature review. Anger is caused by many factors but todays children face a particular risk of experiencing anger as a result of divorce. Without aid, persistent anger can lead to overload, characterized by extended periods of upset. The effects of anger problems include physical and health problems, including a compromised immune system and depression. Anger may also cause children to act out, leading to aggression, social problems and even violence. Coping strategies frequently focus upon adults who must provide the support services necessary for children struggling with their anger. This paper offers recommendations for practice as well as some direction for future research. Introduction Childhood anger is a serious behavioral issue. Background Review of the Literature Anger is a natural emotion with which all children must eventually learn to cope. Children often struggle with understanding their anger (Marion, 2009). Anger may also become out of hand. While the DSM-IV does not distinguish anger as a separate disorder category, anger is frequently treated as a distinct condition by many psychologists and other practitioners. A distinct psychological problem in children which is separate from diagnoses such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder Anger may be a brief condition lasting only a few moments or anger may be more prolonged. Anger overload involves an extended period of intense anger. Gottlieb (2008) explains that with anger overload, the child becomes totally consumed by his angry thoughts and feelings the anger can last as long as an hour, with the child tuning out the thoughts, sounds or soothing words of others concurrent with other conditions, such as bipolar disorder or social anxiety disorder. Negative Consequences Anger in children has been associated with a variety of different negative consequences. These include physical illness triggered by an overstretched immune system, depression and aggression. In a review of empirical literature, Kerr and Schneider (2008) conclude that youth who cope inappropriately with their anger are at a risk for problematic interpersonal relationships and negative outcomes in terms of both mental and general health (p. 559). If anger management or coping strategies are not developed by the child, these problems may continue within adulthood.School-based programs typically focus upon containing the most aggressive consequences of childhood violence. Mytton et al. (2006) surveyed school based violence prevention programs and found that anger management is an important subcomponent of these programs. However, such programs fail to offer support services to children who do not display violent tendencies. Focusing upon violent prevention is important but not adequate for dealing with anger in children. Discussion Methods This project focused upon developing a literature review devoted to the topic of anger in children. Specifically, three distinct factors were studied: the cause of anger, the consequences of anger and coping mechanisms that are useful for children. The literature was collected using a variety of different resources, including the internet and electronic databases such as Questia.com and PubMed, the service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine and National Institute of Health. In addition, recent books were surveyed, as were local and regional newspapers. This search method focused upon collecting a variety of high quality resources offering empirical information and analytical discussions.ResultsDivorce is a significant cause of anger in children. Divorce negatively impacts children in many ways because the family unit suffers from a series of different changes that will generate negative emotions (Wallerstein and Blakesleet, 2006, p. 6). Children will often find themselves moved from their home, attending a different school and suffering from the loss of regular contact at home with both parents. Children will be angered by the loss of friends and the loss of the parent without custody. Parents may choose to use their children as a tool to hurt the other and it is difficult for parents to keep our childrens best interests first in the middle of all of the emotional complications of divorce (Emery 2006, p. 3). Such behavior can generate anger, frustration and resentment in children of all ages. Analysis Anger is a persistent problem in children. Considerable research has been conducted on the subject. Coping strategies tend to focus upon behavior modification in children and educating parents and other adults to identify and respond to anger problems.Public attention is primarily focused upon violence in children as a consequent of anger. This focus is not surprising given the phenomenon of violence in American schools. As a USA Today article explained, over the last two decades, the study of violence and aggression has received an increasing amount of attention from behavioral scientists, partly in response to the rising number of incidents among children and youth (Cillessen 48). While the study of the causes of violence is important, anger as a phenomenon in children should be studied as a distinct subject. Children with anger problems may manifest their anger in different ways. Those who turn inward and develop physical or social problems outside of the boundaries of violence ma y be overlooked if the focus upon violence continues. This current research focus provides some grounds for the development of new modes of empirical inquiry, which are discussed in the concluding section. Conclusion Anger in children is generated by a variety of different factors, including divorce. Anger is a natural emotion and its existence is not, by itself, a problem. However, children often lack the maturity to understand their anger. Failure to develop sufficient coping mechanisms can cause lifelong physical and mental problems. Additional causes of anger may be poor socialization skills and physical problems.The solution to child anger must begin with the preparation of adults. Children are not capable of expressing their needs and this is the primary cause of anger. The lack of autonomy and articulation of children places the responsibility upon their attending adults. Parents, teachers and other adults working with children should become educated on the manifestation of anger in children. Degree programs for youth educators should include child psychology courses to help prepare teachers and other professionals with the tools they need to identify and respond positively to a childs anger.The literature does not offer a consen sus view on how to specifically help children cope. Many different options are available and it appears likely that different children may respond to different coping strategies. Future research should concentrate upon different coping strategies and mechanisms in order to determine the most successful outcomes. College Students Trapped by Credit Card Debt My best friend from my childhood is a marketing agent’s dream. Constantly duped and deceived by flashy ads and predatory marketing, this kid will buy anything - usuall on credit. At last check, my friend had maxed out 4 credit cards to the tune of over $30,000. Very rarely did the money go for something necessary, like accommodation or food, but usually was spent on a multitude of gadgets, toys, and other assorted ‘guy-stuff.’ CDs, a subwoofer, X-boxes and PlayStations, new rims and tires†¦he even whipped out the plastic to cover the $5,000 for his girlfriend’s new boobs! In my humble opinion, this was probably one of his wiser purchases, but still highlights the fact that my friend has a serious problem managing his finances. Unfortunately, my friend is not alone, but is one of thousands of unassuming college students trapped by credit card debt. Potential problems caused by lousy credit history can bite hard. They include: dropping out of college, physical and emotional health problems, family conflicts, bankruptcy, job rejections due to bad credit, loan denials, inability to rent apartments, graduate school rejections, and even suicide (Manning, 160). About 3 – 4 percent of college students suffer from serious credit problems (Manning, 160). While this number may seem small, that translates into 304 students just at HSU alone (4% of 7611 total students). College campuses make fertile feeding grounds for predatory marketing strategies. College is a time of self-discovery, when many students are enjoying their first real tastes of independence away from the home. For many, obtaining that first credit card is a natural step in establishing financial sovereignty. The fact of the matter however, is that college kids are also more prone to naivety with credit cards, which often hide the true costs of buy ing on credit. According to the Nellie Mae Corporation (a division of the federal Sallie Mae fund), over 95% of graduate students have credit cards, with the average student owing $4,776 in debt. 20% of those graduate students have debt between $6,000 and $15,000, and 6% have debt greater than $15,000.

The opening of the stanza â€Å"Brash with glass† immediately tells the reader that this is a luxurious place or arrogant. The word â€Å"Brash† is ironic as it can mean white faced. The harsh vowel of the assonance helps the reader to suggest the poet’s anger. The simile and alliteration of the phrase â€Å"flaring like a flag† conveys the idea that the restaurant asserts itself, even in its name. The word â€Å"flag† suggests that the people who set up a flag, have conquered someone else’s land. This highlights the idea of when the whites stole the land of South Africa. â€Å"Flaring† suggests that the whites are bragging to the masses (blacks) about their superior lifestyle and it conveys Afrika’s anger as this links to the image of heat used earlier in stanza two â€Å"anger of my eyes. † The simile â€Å"guard at the gatepost† suggest that the restaurant is reserved exclusively for white people. The â€Å"guards† are threatening the masses (blacks. ) He explains that even though there is â€Å"No sign† displayed outside the â€Å"whites only inn† and Apartheid was supposed to be put to an end. The â€Å"guard† is replaced instead of the sign as they block the masses (blacks) from entering the â€Å"haute cuisine. † Therefore, Afrika gives a clear image to the reader that Apartheid still exists. In â€Å"I am not that woman† Kishawar Naheed attempts to redefine the man-woman relationship; and address the situation she faces in her everyday life of exploitation and oppression. It is illustrated in the words â€Å"Now it is time for me to flower free. † The alliteration gives the impression that she wants to fight back and does not want to live restricted anymore. The words â€Å"Now† and â€Å"free† shows when she wants to redefine the man-woman relationship. Moreover, she explains how she wants to live like. Naheed wants a life with no restrictions and for men and women to be treated equally. The message in the poem is that men and women are not always treated equally; and how there is still sexism and discrimination. In particular, women are not dominated by men and men are treated with prestige and power. The poem helps her express her thoughts and feelings. Afrika’s words are ambiguous â€Å"we know where we belong. † This perhaps emphasises that the masses (blacks) know that they are discriminated from entering the inn as there is a â€Å"guard at the gate post. † The use of the pronoun â€Å"we† emphasises that he believes that his identity belongs with the masses (blacks.) The â€Å"single rose† on each table contrast with the â€Å"working man’s cafe. † As a â€Å"single rose† symbolises high quality lifestyle or perfection. It could also mean the arrogant wealth that was amongst the mass poverty at the time. In the words â€Å"My motherhood† Naheed conveys that women were born to nurture and care. On the other hand, the men in her society have stolen this substantial and amazing gift from them. Instead women are forced to be voiceless, obedient and were unfairly treated as servants due to the male dominance. â€Å"My loyalty† suggests that her husband and her father took away her loyalty and treated her unfairly. Naheed is aware that she has the right to achieve her â€Å"loyalty† again. In the fifth stanza the poet uses the words â€Å"bunny chows† to convey the masses (blacks) poor lifestyle in the â€Å"working man’s cafe. † â€Å"Bunny chows† was cheap at the time and a common local snack of a poor man’s hamburger; it is a stark contrast with â€Å"haute cuisine. † In the restaurant there are â€Å"plastic table’s top,† this suggests the poor lifestyle the masses had. The â€Å"plastic table’s top† suggests that there is no tablecloth and they felt incomplete, empty and it must have been uncomfortable to eat on. â€Å"Wipe your fingers on your jeans† gives the impression that there is nowhere to wash one’s hands after eating or a tissue to wipe hands. Afrika uses direct imagery to show the life of the masses (blacks. ) Kishwar suggests that women do not have self respect. This is evident in â€Å"The woman on the poster half naked. † Naheed is commenting on how men view women as objects or for sexual pleasure. She wants this view to change. The tone â€Å"No, no I am not that woman! † emphasises that Naheed is not a woman who is obedient, subservient and does not want to avoid any arguments or disagreements with anything the men verbalize. The repetition of â€Å"no† shows that she is certain on her actions and strongly disagrees with how many women in the Asian culture are living. Afrika uses the words â€Å"boy again† to show that the appearance of District six brings back memories of his childhood when the Apartheid system existed. He does not feel independent as he feels like a â€Å"boy† and believes he is following the whites like how a child is with their parents. â€Å"Hands burn† emphasises his anger against the system and his urge to destroy the symbol of segregation. Afrika repeats the title â€Å"Nothing’s changed† at the ending of the poem. He conveys that even though Apartheid has been Abolished, the masses (blacks) are still treated inferior. The final stanza shows his anger and disappointment of the economic division between the whites and the masses (blacks) and conveys that the society has not changed at all. The layout of â€Å"Nothing’s changed† is set out in eight short lines in each of the six stanzas. The layout creates a sense of control as he is clear on what he is feeling and no sudden rage is introduced at any point in the poem. His anger increases gradually within each line. The poet makes his argument straight forward by emphasising his feelings in a calm manner. In the first stanza the use of imagery makes the reader feel as if they are ‘in the poet’s shoes. ‘ This makes it clear and easy to imagine how life was like for Tatumkhulu Afrika. This is illustrated in the words â€Å"Small round hard stones click under my heels. † It makes it easy to imagine the masses (blacks) unpleasant and unfortunate lifestyle. The structure of â€Å"I am not that woman† is informal. The layout of the stanzas do not fit in a regular pattern and none of the words rhyme with each other. The free flowing structure shows how determined Naheed is about her argument. This conveys that nothing can change the way she is and nothing will hold her back. Even by the simple rules of poetry. It emphasises how infatuated she is towards emancipation. Furthermore, she is protesting about women having access to equal opportunities and rights as men; and women should not be treated as if they are worthless or disempowered. It is seen in the words â€Å"my loyalty. † The tones between â€Å"Nothing’s changed† and â€Å"I am not that woman† are very different. Kishwar Naheed’s tone in â€Å"I am not that woman† is very calm, but firm. Her steady tone conveys that she has control over what is being said by repeatedly claiming â€Å"I not that woman. † Tatumkhulu Afrika’s tone contrasts compared to Naheeds. In â€Å"Nothing’s changed† the poet seems to be increasing his rage within each line as he sees more things that have not changed even though Apartheid was abolished. Moreover, he is feeling angry because he had not been to District six for many years. In-conclusion, I believe that Kishwar Naheed in â€Å"I am not that woman† argument is stronger as the poem relates more to her lifestyle, cultural beliefs and traditional values about what she has experienced as a woman herself. Naheed clearly explains that wants equality between men and women. Moreover, she does not want to live a typical lifestyle of an asian; and leaves the reader in hope that there is a chance of change. However I believe that Tatumkhulu Afrika argument in â€Å"Nothing’s changed. † Is not as strong as Naheed’s as he leaves the reader feeling helpless and has not attempted to change his lifestyle as much as Naheed has in â€Å"nothing’s changed. † Afrika has allowed the whites to treat the masses (blacks) unfairly; because he was not as determined or eager as Naheed. He mainly just agreed how â€Å"nothing’s changed† however, Naheed believes that no one can stop or change her views. This is why I strongly believe Naheeds’s argument is more effective. I believe that Naheed’s argument will become more powerful if the majority of women did not accept the cultural beliefs of a submissive Asian housewife and they were all determined to fight for equality. By women taking action as a group by giving their views and speaking; the men may realise that women are treated unfairly, and their lifestyle may change once they have taken action.

The Walking Dead. The Walking Dead was released eight years ago and was an instant hit with almost everybody. It is now on its ninth season and seems to be still going strong as AMC recently announced they will be filming a Walking Dead movie based on the shows most famous character, Rick Grimes. A former sheriff deputy in Atlanta Georgia who was shot in the line of duty and fell into a coma, only to wake up in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. Without the show ever giving you much details of how this zombie apocalypse happened, it leaves the viewer eager to see what the next episode or season will bring to the table. The Walking Dead shows major character development throughout this apocalyptic scenario most viewers enjoy. Kimberly Hickok a staff writer for Live Science believes Zombies represent a longing to reconnect with humanity. â€Å"Humans are naturally good at empathy, but we are bombarded with information from news outlets and technology, which tends to destroy that empathy, especially when it comes to empathy for people outside your personal circle† (Hickok). But, without technology the characters in the show are personally responsible deciding whether the person they encounter is good or bad. These decisions Rick Grimes and other characters need to make in the show really take a toll on the themselves as they fight for any means of survival. You slowly watch the empathy of these characters fade and in some sort of way reappear in certain situations, though rarely. As the show goes on you find yourself becoming in some way attached to each character, almost as if you were part of the show itself. The Walking Dead goes through its abundance of characters as quickly as some of these characters don’t last on the show. Whether they are eaten alive, turn into zombies or as this show likes to call it, â€Å"walkers†. Or inevitably meet their fate to another group of survivors trying to harvest each other goods such as food and weapons. What I like most about this show is I feel it gives a good representation of how scarce supplies can be during such an apocalyptic event. Which in end causes characters having to make rash decisions based on their survival throughout the longevity of the show. You see people go from good to what looks to be bad based off events the characters must do in order to survive. This show is filled with many major antagonists that show signs of pure evilness with zero sense of empathy. One of the most infamous of these antagonists is Negan. So evil and almost God-like, people bow to him in fear as he torments his group of people with torture and death to keep them in line and in constant fear of their lives. Without giving too much away, there is a scene with Negan in one of the episodes of seasons 6 that leaves you with a gut-wrenching feeling of hopelessness that feels so real it keeps the viewers mind racing. It is during this episode that you can truly and without a doubt get sense of their reality and what it might feel like to be in a situation like that. Maybe this is why it is one of the most memorable episodes The Walking Dead has released (Bryant). Though the shows does indeed have some downfalls, such as random deaths where a single zombie somehow puts people or characters I should say, into this frozen fear where the character almost allows himself or herself to just be eaten or bitten. But still – there’s an awful lot of â€Å"conflict† that consists of two people with opposing viewpoints just standing around and grumbling at each other†. Yes, the show does consist of episodes where there may be more talking and less dying or fighting but Murray also counters his argument with, â€Å"The writers seem to think this is essential to the drama. Muted dialogue scenes give the story room to breathe and clarify where everybody stands. But the characters hardly ever talk about anything new.† But at wh at point is there anything â€Å"new† to talk about besides looking for food, shelter, weapons, and surviving from zombies. After all, those are a lot of the most important things in need during a zombie apocalypse. So, I find it hard myself to believe the characters would be focused on talking about anything but those necessities. Overall, IMDb gives this show an 8.4 out of 10 stars as where I’d give it a little closer to nine. This show brings a brilliant edge on a world filled with zombies as everyone scrambles to survive. It fills the viewer with emotions and character fulfillment that many want in all of their shows. The Walking Dead was nominated for a Golden globe for best television series as well as being a winner for a Primetime Emmy for outstanding prosthetic makeup for a series, miniseries, movie or special. And I couldn’t agree more, as the show progresses you see these zombies become so real, with blood, guts, and rotting, decaying corpses that they mindlessly walk in. The Walking Dead has been nominated for Primetime Emmy’s multiple of times for outstanding prosthetics as well as special effects the show brings. If you love a zombie apocalyptic themed show that keeps you on edge and brings a real-life factor of survival and rash decision making than look no further, this show is for you. So this dissertation is mainly carried out to find a way to transfer the animation from one character to another character in a simpler and easier way. Man power is more important in simulating a crowd in feature film. Technically, creating the crowd is not a big deal but at that same time transferring the animation to each and every character with the different timing is the big deal. The another problem is that the rendering the whole scene with lots and lots of character in a particular scene will make the scene the most complicated one. So finding a better solution for creating the entire scene in Maya with lots and lots of character which has the different timing in their animation. There are several methods for the development of crowd simulation. The major method is using Mayas Dynamics. There are several external softwares which helps to simulate a entire crowd. But the method which said by this dissertation is quite simple and easier than comparing to another external softwares and Mayas Dynamics. 1.4| Objectives: Various types of crowd simulation method.
